Great Tropical Drive
The Great Tropical Drive is a self-drive route that will take you from Cairns and Townsville to some amazing places in tropical north Queensland.
The touring route winds its way from palm-fringed beaches, to ancient rainforests and the golden outback of North Queensland.
Follow the Great Tropical Drive for 12 days and 2,079 km to some of Australia’s best-known attractions including the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest and Undara Lava Tubes, and be prepared for many unexpected and delightful discoveries along the way.
Or you can take a shorter Discovery Trail. Choose from 13 Discovery Trails - each one providing a unique itinerary that will give you a taste of tropical Queensland, from overnight drives onto the Tablelands, to week-long 4WD journeys and campervan adventures into the goldfields.

Food & Wine Trail
Visit Mareeba, Australia’s largest coffee producing area.
Tour the coffee plantations and enjoy a taste of the various premium brews. Sample tropical fruit wines and liqueurs at boutique wineries in the Cairns Highlands.
Highlights include mango wine and mango and mulberry port.
Wildlife Trail
Explore the stunning Mossman Gorge, where you might spot the brilliant blue of the Ulysses butterfly or the silhouette of a primitive Boyd’s forest dragon.
Venture further towards Townsville and enjoy barramundi fishing and bird watching along the way.
Waterfalls Trail
Cruise through fields of sugar cane before journeying to the Cairns Highlands, where you will find Millaa Millaa, a scenic circuit with 3 waterfalls.
Take a side trip to Millstream Falls, Australia’s widest waterfall.
